Did you know that the global board game market is expected to surpass $30 billion by 2032 with strategy board games leading the charge in popularity?
It is true! If you are someone like me who loves a good mental challenge more than a mindless scroll then it is no surprise.
I have always been drawn to games that make you think. Not just to win but to actually outthink your opponent, plan ahead and adapt. Whether it is a long duel of Chess with my father or building an engine in Wingspan on a rainy Sunday, strategy board games have been a big part of my downtime.
But what are the best strategy board games that you can play? Let’s figure it out!
Why Strategy Board Games Are More Than Just Games
When I first started playing board games I was wondering why it is so trending? But later after researching I came to know what makes strategy board games best.
According to research published in the International Journal of Game-Based Learning, strategic games help improve decision-making and memory retention. Interesting right?
Top 6 Best Strategy Games That Will Help You to Become Productive
Now let me help you to understand the best strategy board games in 2025. Keep on reading this.
1. Catan (formerly Settlers of Catan)
Catan is a resource-trading game where you build settlements, roads and cities on a modular hex board. Each hex produces resources (wood, brick, ore, wheat or sheep). And players must strategically trade and develop their territories to reach 10 victory points first.
This was the first “modern” board game I played after years of Monopoly. I still remembered bartering desperately for brick like it was gold.
Let me tell you why it is great:
- Encourages negotiation and reading people
- Board changes every game = endless replayability
- You have to adapt strategies constantly based on dice rolls and trades
The best part? Easily 6 players can play this game for playtime of at least 60-120 minutes for this game over 32 million copies have been sold globally.
2. Terraforming Mars

Players are competing corporations working together (sort of) to terraform Mars. You earn points by increasing oxygen, building cities and completing projects like asteroid strikes or algae growth. You will be surprised to know that each of these has unique abilities and you build an engine through cards.
This game blew me away. It is definitely rewarding and every card you play can lead to a chain of smart moves or a crash if you plan poorly.
Why it is better to play:
- Extremely thematic and immersive
- Combines engine-building, hand management and area control
- Multiple viable strategies adapt or die.
Easily 1 to 5 players can play this game for at least 120-180 minutes. So, it’s a good strategic game.
3. Chess
This is one of my personal games. I grew up watching my father dominate Chess boards. This is the ultimate abstract strategy game which requires no dice and no hidden cards. It requires just 64 squares, 16 pieces per sid and infinite depth. Players aim to checkmate their opponent’s king while defending their own.
Here are some reasoning why it is my favourite
- Teaches patience, foresight and defense
- Sharpens critical thinking like nothing else
- No two games are the same
What’s the most interesting thing about chess is that over 600 million people play Chess worldwide. During the 2020 pandemic and online platforms like Chess.com saw a 5x increase in users.
4. 7 Wonders Duel

This is a two-player variant of the popular 7 Wonders game. In this game you can easily draft cards to build wonders, develop your civilization and pursue victory via military, science or points.
To be honest this is my go to two player game. The card pyramid drafting system is up to mark you can block or bait your opponent. Every time I think I have found the perfect game my opponent surprises me. It’s balanced and thrilling.
Why it is up to mark:
- Short playtime but high depth
- Multiple win conditions keep both players on edge
- Great for strategic duels
Here is one of the short notes- It has won dozens of awards, including the Golden Geek for Best 2-Player Game.
5. Twilight Struggle

This is again a 2 player game which can be played for up to 180 minutes. Set during the Cold War, this is a tug-of-war of influence between the US and the USSR. In this game you will find various and interesting historical cards.
I played this with a friend who’s a history professor. We were both amazed at how educational and intense it was. I had to manage influence in Asia while dealing with the Cuban Missile Crisis.
Why it’s great:
- Rich historical storytelling
- Requires timing, bluffing, and risk control
- Winning feels incredibly rewarding
You will be surprised to know that Twilight Struggle was ranked the #1 board game on BoardGameGeek for nearly 5 straight years.
6. Wingspan
If you are an ecosystem or bird enthusiastic then this is the best game you can go for. Here you have to collect food, lay eggs and attract birds. Each comes with special abilities to create an engine that earns points.
I was skeptical at first. But it’s beautifully designed and very strategic. It is also super calming. This is our go-to Sunday game when we want something that challenges us without stress.
But it’s the best?
- Stunning artwork and components
- Engine-building mechanics are deeply satisfying
- Educational and relaxing at the same time
Wingspan sold over 1 million copies in its first two years and won the 2019 Kennerspiel des Jahres award.
Here you go! These are my favourite 6 best strategy board games. Which one are you picking for your next game night? Let me know.
